Look up in the sky and here they come! These birds fly in perfect formation, all in beautiful harmony with each other. I’m drawn to subjects that move in step, or in flight, with each other. However, the beauty of birds in flight is particularly amazing and satisfying to portray.
I’m not alone in my fascination with birds in flight. According to Audobon.org:
“Since primeval times people have looked at masses of birds moving as one and wondered how they do it. The ancient Romans had their explanation: Gods, they believed, hinted at their intentions in the way birds flew. Scientists of the early 20th century, perhaps almost as credulous, groped for such mysterious and even mystical concepts as ‘natural telepathy’ or a ‘group soul.”
The article in Audobon.com explains that technological innovations that combine scientific and artistic means, such as high-speed photography, and high-tech computer simulations, combine to allow scientists to try to analyze and understand how birds flock. They note that a diverse array of professionals are interested in this phenomenon, including: “mathematicians, physicists, even economists.”
If you’ve ever stopped to watch birds in flight, you probably understand the inspiration they offer the sculpture artist. They dive and soar as a flock, and sometimes almost appear stationary, even though they are engaged in extreme action.
My goal in sculpting this flock was to show how these 16 birds create movement together.
“The Birds” has dimensions of 18″H x 8″W x 8″D.
If, like me, you appreciate art portraying wildlife, take a look at my gallery of available sculptures. There are several works showcasing birds in flight, and others include: blue herons, a sailfish, a spoonbill, a striper fish and giraffes, just to name a few.
This bronze sculpture, and other pieces featured on my site, are available for purchase. Contact me to discuss ordering or visit one of my affiliated galleries.
