“I have always been intrigued by the beauty, flow and elasticity of the human body. To see a figure bend, stretch, pull and twist is a true wonder of nature that has always stimulated my imagination.”
This statement helps illustrate my interest in sculpting dancers and athletes. As athletes strive to perfect each move to improve their results, I do the same when I create each sculpture.
It takes months to get the right shape, movement and articulation correct for each work of art. The piece evolves and changes constantly under construction. In the course of creating the form, I study and replicate the subject matter, using multiple angles of observation. Each work begins as an armature, and goes through months of iterations before it is finally cast in bronze.
Sharecare explains, “Gymnastics is a sport that requires strength, flexibility, core strength, balance, upper and lower-body strength, power, mental focus, discipline and dedication. Although not necessarily a skill, commitment is mandatory and is often assessed by gymnastic coaches.”
While the results of a gymnast’s art and a sculpture’s art are very different, it didn’t escape my notice that several of the proficiencies overlap. Artistry also requires mental focus, discipline and dedication. There is no doubt that commitment is a key factor for anyone pursing their craft, no matter if their craft is physical, artistic or intellectual.
Gymnast is 28” high. View it on my website.
