In the next stage of the creation process, the ceramic mold is built by dipping the wax casting into a ceramic investment liquid a number of times, building up the structure of the mold. Between each drip, it is allowed to dry. The ceramic shell is then fired and the wax melts out of the shell creating a hollow shell. (Remember that we call this the “lost wax method.”)
Liquid bronze is poured into the ceramic shell. After cooling the ceramic shell is broken away leaving the bronze piece. The piece is then chased, re-detailed, welded together if necessary, and polished ready for the patina process.
The next stage of the creation process is not for the faint of heart! This involves carefully pouring molten bronze into the ceramic shell mold in layers. After cooling, the ceramic shell is broken away, leaving the bronze piece. The wax is removed from the mold and detailed to ensure it exactly resembles the original clay sculpture. When executing this stage of the process, practitioners wear protective clothing in case there is an accident with the incredibly hot bronze. Then, the mold is removed from the furnace.
