“Striper” is inspired by all my days and nights fishing the beautiful waters of Martha’s Vineyard. This piece invokes the glow of the fish’s stripes. It twists and lunges to escape the hook in an act of defiance and beauty.
Striped bass fishing is a renowned exercise on Martha’s Vineyard. So much so, there have been several books written on the topic. The website Striperspace.com features descriptions of a few of these books.
The site highlights Reading the Water – Adventures in Surf Fishing from Martha’s Vineyard, by Robert Post. This book details the stories of 16 different fishermen who “use all the tricks in the book to catch stripers” and describes that “many go to extraordinary lengths to conceal any information they glean on where, and on what, the stripers are biting.”
Another featured book, The Big One, by David Kinney, a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, tells the story of “a bunch of hardcore anglers during the 62nd annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby contest.”
Striper Hot Spots, by Frank Daignault, selects Martha’s Vineyard as a top spot to fish for striped bass and “describes a number of specific spots on the island that are the very best for surf fishing.”
It’s not surprising that these majestic fish have inspired these authors and more to write about them. The shape and action of a striper attacking my lure in the water compelled me to create this sculpture featuring the striped bass. When I look at this work, I think of the intense action of a 10 pounder splashing and racing after my bait. I catch and release the fish and watch them continue to forge ahead in the beautiful waters.
