The Women’s Movement is recently experiencing a resurgence as strong women reclaim their voices and demand change that has been slow to come. Women have long been inspiring and influencing change in their governments, their communities, as well as in their workplaces, industries and families.
A BBC History Magazine poll last year asked experts in 10 fields to nominate women they believed to have the biggest impact on world history. The results include pioneering scientist Marie Curie (1897-1934), civil rights advocate Rosa Parks (1913-2005), the first computer programmer Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), aviator Amelia Earhart (1897-1937), as well as historical figures, such as Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra (69 BCE – 30 BCE) and martyr and military leader Joan of Arc (1412-1431).
Clearly, women have been leading and influencing the world since the beginning of time. A cultural icon that may come to mind when picturing strong women is that of Rosie the Riveter. In 1942, the Westinghouse Company’s War Production Coordinating Committee hired artist J. Howard Miller to create images to help inspire women to step up to join the workforce. His “We Can Do It” image became an iconic representation of women who worked in factories during World War II. The woman’s display of a strong bicep was intended to help instill confidence in women and encourage them to step out of their traditional comfort zones.
Similarly, my sculpture, Walking Lady, celebrates the poise and strength of today’s modern women. I was inspired by the women’s movement of yesteryear and today to create this figure of a strong woman. Her head held high and her back erect, she is determined to win in today’s world. Looking at her, there’s no doubt she will make waves of change and influence her world in a positive direction.
Walking Lady, available in bronze or crystal, would make an amazing gift for the woman graduate in your life or any woman who is making strides to make a difference in the world. This work of art serves as a reminder of women’s important role in the past and the forward direction they will continue to move in the future.
